Dear Editor, the publication on “Evaluation of factors influencing survival time in 77 dogs with lymphoma” (Jeong, 2023). This work offers important insights into prognostic markers in canine lymphoma. However, there are several areas where the technique and outcomes should be improved. One significant limitation is the retroactive character of the analysis, which limits the capacity to adjust for confounding variables. While leukocyte and platelet abnormalities have been found as poor prognostic indicators, it is unknown how other clinical parameters (such as age, breed, and lymphoma stage) may influence these outcomes. Future studies should benefit from a prospective design that allows for a more controlled assessment of prognostic signs, potentially leading to a better understanding of how factors interact to affect survival.

This study underlines the necessity of treatment regimens but lacks in-depth research on specific chemotherapy drugs and combinations. The claim that “multi-agent as a rescue protocol” may improve survival demands a closer look at what these agents are and how they compare to single-agent therapy. A careful comparison investigation of survival in dogs treated with various chemotherapy regimens might improve the validity of the conclusions reached. Furthermore, including information on response rates and adverse effects associated with each treatment regimen may provide a more complete picture of the trade-offs between prospective efficacy and treatment acceptability. A major question emerges regarding the parameters employed to determine treatment adherence. How was the term “strict adherence” employed in this study? Variability in therapy management can create bias and influence patient outcomes. Answering this question may increase the rigor of the results. The documentation of treatment regimens might be valuable in future research. This data could also assist in determining whether adherence is a surrogate marker for better outcomes or if other intrinsic factors play a role. To promote originality in future studies, researchers should consider using novel biomarkers or improved imaging techniques to predict treatment response and survival outcomes. Using next-generation gene sequencing to discover genetic abnormalities associated with canine lymphoma could lead to a better knowledge of individual responses to various chemotherapy treatments. Furthermore, bigger multicenter studies could expand the sample size and diversity of canine lymphoma cases, allowing for the establishment of evidence-based guidelines to improve prognosis and treatment techniques in animal oncology.
